for the honor of His Name
You are God’s masterpiece! The Bible says it this way: “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Eph. 2:10). God is not unlike other artists and crafters in that He also signs His Name to His work.
Think about that for a moment…. You and I bear the Sovereign Name of Holy God, and we display His essence to the world!
Looking back to the Old Testament, the placement of God’s Name upon a city (Jerusalem- 2 Chronicles 6:6) and the temple (2 Chronicles 6:10) was a very important statement. Repeatedly, we read of kings and God Himself declaring these places as bearing His Name. “I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there” (2 Chronicles 7:16).
Believers, we need to understand that our bodies serve as God’s temples. “Or didn’t you realize that your body is a sacred place, the place of the Holy Spirit? Don’t you see that you can’t live however you please, squandering what God paid such a high price for? The physical part of you is not some piece of property belonging to the spiritual part of you. God owns the whole works. So let people see God in and through your body” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, MSG).
In recent years, I’ve been doing some radical acts of obedience that require me to put my name upon things for the public to see. There’s a God-confidence at work in me that enables me to take these very bold steps. I know that following His call is not at all about my name nor my qualifications. It is simply a desire of His Name being declared great.
Yes, Lord, walking in the way of Your laws, we wait for You; Your Name and renown are the desire of our hearts. Isaiah 26:8
