his name is El Roi
Take comfort, Friend. He is the God who sees. His name is El Roi, and for any who have every felt abandoned, forgotten or rejected, know that He never allows a child of His to escape His sight.
Hagar, Sarai’s maidservant, was in distress and ran. Caught up in Sarai’s small-minded plan to produce a child for Abram, Hagar is now pregnant with his son and the object of Sarah’s scorn. She flees the scene assuming she will never be accepted in her mistress’ household.
He has a way of doing that, doesn’t He? Genesis 16:7 states, “The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert…” This is the nature of our God- He finds us, because He is looking for us. He is the God who sees, and Hagar quickly realized that truth when He spoke to her about the child in her womb.
She rightly assessed the Lord’s name saying, He is “The God Who Sees Me.” Having set her eyes on the one who sees, she was ready to return to her mistress in submission and await the coming child.
Today as I am praying for many who are on my heart, I am comforted knowing that The God Who Sees is not far from those who grieve. He sees the ones who thought they were abandoned, and He allows Himself to be seen by the rejected.
As our nation looks upon the grotesqueness of the evil unleashed upon a community now intimately associated with unfathomable grief, we need to remember that God’s name is El Roi, and He is intervening.
