let’s talk wisdom
Any list-makers out there? This is one habit I cannot seem to shake. For as long as I can remember, I have written my lists: calls to make, jobs to do, chores to accomplish, groceries to buy… just now I had to pause from writing to grab my planning calendar and add a couple of shopping items to my list!
This morning I listed some interesting truths from Proverbs chapter 4. I have two categories: my action and benefits. The topic is acquiring wisdom. This one is worthy of blogging, and do you want to know why? Through serving in ministries to various age groups, I have learned over the years that all ages desire the wisdom of God to guide their steps in life. The thirteen year old seeks it as well as the grown adult. Let us remember, although, that there are two types of wisdom according to the Holy Spirit- inspired writing of James.
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness. James 3:13-18
Are you also feeling the need for the wisdom from heaven? The following are the actions we need to take to have godly wisdom and the expected benefits as delineated in Proverbs 4.
ACTIONS: listen; pay attention; gain it; do not forsake it; lay hold of it with all your heart; get it, do not forget it; do not swerve from it; love “her”; even if it cost all you have- get it; esteem it; embrace it; accept it; hold on to it; don’t let go of it; guard it well; keep it within your heart (All these commands concerning wisdom were given in only 27 verses of scripture meaning wisdom is important!)
BENEFITS: you will live; it will protect you; it will watch over you; it will exalt you; it will honor you; it will be a garland of grace upon your head; it will present you with a crown of splendor; it will prevent your steps from being hampered; it will prevent you from stumbling; it is life
My most favorite quote from this chapter and the only appropriate thing to say in conclusion is, “Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom.”
