light overcomes darkness
Some people ask me, “You run that trail alone?” I do run it, but I never consider myself to be alone. My worship, which is my focus in thought, in prayer and in declaration of faith, invites the Presence of God to run with me. I also remind myself that as a light-bearer, any dark spirit that I may encounter along the path must submit to the light. Light always overcomes the darkness.
Another truth I preach to myself in moments of feeling vulnerable is Romans 8:31-32- “If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up us for us all- how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?”
Remember the story in the news several years ago about the elderly woman who stood her ground when a thief entered her car at the Wal-Mart parking lot? She understood that light overcomes darkness! She remained perfectly calm and told the young man that he was not going to steal money from her. She shared truths from God’s Word and showed him that she genuinely cared about his soul. The woman then gave him ten dollars, which elicited his response of a kiss on her cheek before leaving the car. (Click on “story in the news” link to view video.)
Most of us would be scared half to death if confronted by one who audaciously comes into our vehicle and demands money. We would either quickly give in to all of the intruder’s demands or fight with everything in us. That is the way fear responds. Faith, however, declares, “He who is within me is greater than he who is in the world.”
Yes, there is darkness at work in the world, and we do encounter many whose souls are imprisoned by it. To know God and to abide in His Son, Jesus, is to know that we are by no means subject to the darkness. We overcome the darkness because of the light of God within us.
Is there a fear or doubt reigning in your life that you want to overcome? Find out what God’s Word has to say about that very concern- allow Him to dispel the darkness in your thoughts and attitudes through the application of His marvelous light.
