when is a good time to die?
When you’re ready!
I am encouraged today by Paul’s strong language concerning life and death as recorded in Philippians chapter one. His part in deciding the outcome is clear: “Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two; I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it’s more necessary for you that I remain in the body. Convinced of this, I know I will remain…”
Do you ever consider your role in determining when to die? Do you also feel it is more important for you to remain so that through your presence, those to whom you minister will have joy in Christ overflowing on account of you (adapted from Philippians 1:26, NIV)?
It was about six years after Paul made the decision to live that he expressed his readiness to give up his spirit. He wrote, “For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for my departure. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith…” (2 Timothy 4:6-7).
Be encouraged! Put it upon your mind and heart to also finish your race, and don’t worry about dying before your time! Do not fear death but understand its sweet reward as described by Paul.
“Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day- and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing” (2 Timothy 4:8).
