It is such a commonplace discussion in our day and time, but I am still in disbelief that the following topic is newsworthy for an interview segment on national news television.
“Mayor, what inspired you to change the name of your town’s tree from a Holiday Tree to a Christmas Tree?”
Really? Is our society so touchy when it comes to Christ and the celebration of His birth that a mayor’s boldness to say Christmas is actually a gripping news story?
The Father wanted to address my concern this morning as I picked up in the book of Matthew where I left off yesterday. What do you think the Word of God highlights in this passage? Jesus Christ has always been and will always be a dividing factor. People are either for Him or against Him. There is no middle-of-the-road status. As the two thieves who hung on either side of Him on the day of their crucifixion proved, you will either mock and curse Jesus, or you will look to Him for salvation.
So, let us take comfort in this season of celebrating the Savior’s coming to a hurting world without hope! As we proclaim Him and deal with persecution from the mockers, God wants us to know that He is intimately aware of what we are enduring (Matthew 10:29-31). Therefore, we have reason to be even bolder. We can go on a national news program and declare with confidence, “That evergreen tree in a stand is a Christmas Tree! Yes, I honor the Lord Jesus Christ and celebrate His work of salvation in my life!”
I’ll close with the words of my Lord that He spoke encouraging the disciples to go forth with boldness and proclaim the kingdom of heaven.
Whoever acknowledges Me before men, I will also acknowledge him before My father in heaven. But whoever disowns Me before men, I will disown him before My Father in heaven.
Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn “a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law- a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.”
Anyone who loves his father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
