Everyone who celebrated Christmas with us this year received a small gift: a handmade token of remembrance of this special occasion. Throughout November and December, I lovingly crafted these nautical inspired ornaments to share with friends and family. Making them brought me great joy. Not a work session went by that I didn’t think of my mother and all of her crafting days. It was special having her near in that sense.
Why do we love to give gifts at Christmas? Many tend to reflect on the things of great wealth that the wise men brought to our Lord Jesus at the time of His birth. That may be part of our motivation for gift-giving… We should also remember that because we are made in the image of God, we give because He gave. Jesus came to be among us, to die in the place of us for our sins, and to show us the way to the Father. He did it all because of God’s love for His created. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
On this day of the year when shoppers are returning unwanted gifts, let us rejoice in the gift of life we have in Christ! That we may never seek to exchange this indescribable gift of God’s love!
