when life isn’t working

Symptoms: life seems stale, lack of motivation, lost creativity, easily and frequently saddened, fatigue, joint pain, avoiding crowds, quick to complain, critical of friends and family…

This, my friend, is the common “dry spirit” diagnosis, but do not worry! It is treatable! Before you ever encountered the first symptom, God already promised to dispense the ultimate prescription!

If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him (John 7:37-38, NIV).

God’s plan for your life is that you never would run dry, that life will hold before you the excitement of what is to come! He deems you to be creative- a supernatural problem-solver! He desires to keep your mind, body and spirit refreshed so that you may go forth and refresh others! In this Spirit-induced state, you won’t avoid crowds; you’ll bite at the bit to get to the crowds so that you may release the overflow of God’s glorious grace at work within you!

Does all this seem so far out of reach?

When we look to the world for the solutions to our lack, then, yes, the above scenario does appear far off. Let’s see how God contrasts His prescription with the world’s:

“Be very careful, then, how you live- not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5: 15-18, NIV).

In the same way that one turns to alcohol to ease his troubles, you respond to the Father’s come to Me by seeking His refreshing. What a contrast! Alcohol consumption leads to physical dehydration, but receiving the Father’s drink results in an overflow of living water- a state that affects all parts of our being: body, soul and spirit!

In an effort to avoid coming across as a mystic, I want to share practical ways that I go to God for a refreshing drink of life!

Sing praises to God from my heart.

Sing along with Jesus-exalting songs.

Sing with God’s people at church services.

{Our praises are the gate to an open heaven!}

Take in God’s beautiful creation while walking, running or paddling.

Sit still outside and listen to nature’s symphony.

Chew on God’s Word, contemplating its truth.

Seek a quiet place and pray.

Journal thoughts, questions and God’s insights revealed in His Word and through His voice.

Pray with other Spirit-filled believers.

Attend a conference or retreat that has the goal of building up attendees in Christ.

Use the God- given ability to create.

I would love to hear your thoughts on going to the Father and receiving your refreshing! In what practical ways do you drink from His cup?

  1. Such a practical approach to receiving God’s refreshing. I, too, am a nature lover. I find seeing and listening to God’s creation as a way of getting that extra charge. And I love reading God’s Word. It never ceases to speak to me every time I open those precious pages. Praying that God will flow through me today and touch a soul who needs him, as he did for me through you.
