Holy Spirit, Speak to Me
His name is Comforter because He comforts. He guides and He reminds us of what Jesus has spoken. The Holy Spirit is the constant companion in the believer’s life. I believe He is always speaking. I believe, also, that because of His Presence, the testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ can be ours as well: “I do nothing on My own but speak just what the Father has taught Me” (John 8:28).
Do you want to hear the Holy Spirit teach you?
Simply ask Him to speak and position yourself to hear. The following is a quick compilation of personal revelations He has given me when I have done just that.
When told to look outside the window, my eyes are directed to a barren tree, and the Lord tells me that my own family tree will once again return to life just as the signs of life will return to the tree in the spring. Isaiah 61:1-3 confirmed later that day what I heard the Holy Spirit speak, and the month of March brought visible fruits of renewal in the lives of loved ones!
When directed to go to the glass door, I see shadows dancing on our backyard fence as tree branches dance wildly in the wind, and I hear, “Who does not change like shifting shadows.” The reference leads me to James 1 and the Holy Spirit comforts my heart concerning a dilemma I was facing.
Watching vapor clouds ascend from the surface of the pool and quickly evaporate, I learn that our time on earth can be measured by the lifespan of vapor (James 4:14).
Stepping outside in the pre-dawn hours, my breath escapes me at the sight of a full and low moon shining brightly upon me. The Spirit speaks: “You have no light of your own, but you reflect my glory!”
Singing praises while enjoying gentle waves on a sandbar in the ocean, the Lord says that the measure of His grace in comparison to my need is likened to the size of the ocean in comparison to my body’s mass in the midst of it!
A hummingbird visits my potted flowers and while it enjoys their sweet offerings, I hear the Holy Spirit speak, “Five years.” It didn’t take me long to figure out His message! In five, lightening- speed years, our children will have finished high school and moved on to the next phase of their lives. Time to get planning for the upcoming season as husband and wife!
Walking along the river on a hot summer morning, I find scattered dry leaves on the tree-lined boardwalk, and hear, “Whose leaf does not wither.” I look up the Psalms 1 reference and gain insight to needed revelation from the Lord concerning the ministry season I was in.
Listening to the trash trucks clear out debris from a crowded neighborhood, I hear the Holy Spirit confirm the message I was about to share at a women’s conference- the Lord wants to clear the waste from our lives if we so desire to simplify and build on that which is eternal- truth!
Walking a public trail, I was attacked by a dog and afterwards drove myself to the doctor. I had the car radio turned to a station that presented a teaching on Psalm 139: “You discern my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with all my ways.” The Holy Spirit used the trauma and His truth to show me that in all my sufferings to date, He was always there, and He delivered me. Beautiful words of the Spirit’s Presence began the needed work of healing for present and past wounds.
Watching a baby bird attempt to squeeze through a fence opening to reach its mother on the opposite side, I hear the Lord say, “I will reach you even if you’re in a hindered state. In the same way the mother bird pokes her head through the opening to feed her baby, so I nourish you so you can be strong and fly. You, like the baby bird, are not made for a ground-dwelling existence.”
In a moment of discontentment and longing for more material things, I heard the Holy Spirit say, “Take care of what you own.”
Seeking wisdom for a pain similar to a previous blood clot experience, I asked the Father to show me clearly if I need to get a check on the vein or not. Looking later at His Word, I read, “…my body also will rest secure” (Psalm 16:9b). “That settles it,” I said. “I will not call on my doctor for counsel. Thank you for Your peace, Jesus!”

Holy Spirit, continue to speak to me and direct my path. Thank you for faithfully settling matters that concern me. Thank you for Your guidance for the future. I trust in You.
