100-Day Identity Makeover: Day 12
You Are a Friend of Jesus (John 15:15)
It is interesting to hear people’s thoughts about God, because what is at the heart of the ideology of many is a god they conceived in their minds. The Sovereign God of the universe is grossly misrepresented in the perception of His nature to which so many hold. Honestly, it would be easy for all of humanity to miss the reality of God’s divinity apart from the fact that Jesus came and clearly revealed His Father to us. “Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father” (John 14:9).
Jesus said, “I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you” (John 15:15). Child of God, you are not kept far from the Father’s heart. In fact, you have been brought near to know Him intimately, because you are a friend of Jesus.
It would be impossible to investigate fully the “everything” that Jesus reveals about His Father. Perhaps that’s why He simplified the enormity of the revelation of God’s heart. Jesus said, “Love one another” (John 15:12). Adding to this, Jesus said, “You are my friends if you obey what I commanded you” (John 15:14).
Friendship with the Lord comes with responsibility.
Have you ever heard the statement, “Once you have received revelation of truth, you are responsible for obeying it?” So how do we walk in obedience to Jesus’ command to love one another? How can mere man demonstrate love as Jesus described it (and lived it!) in which we “lay down our lives for our friends” (See John 15:13)?
First of all, if you are in Christ Jesus, you are not mere man. “You have been given fullness in Christ” (Colossians 2:10). That means all the supernatural potential to love sacrificially is within you; it just has to be worked out through your daily and hourly decision-making to be obedient. In the same way, your physical nature has all the inner workings for you to be a body builder. If you decide to work it out, the transformation can happen!
In obedience to Jesus’ command and through His love fleshed out, you can:
- Forgive for the umpteenth time.
- Love them when they’re angry.
- See the potential in the one who only imagines a life of defeat.
- Love them when they betray you.
- Humble yourself and ask for forgiveness.
- Love them when they dismiss you.
- Honor the other through humble service even when they have not shown the same humility to you.
Because you are a friend of Jesus, you received the revelation of the Father, and you choose to be obedient to the command to love. Give fresh thanks to God today for the love He has shown you and for the nature of His Son within you. You are equipped to love!
Walk It Out Hear God’s Word and put it into practice (Luke 8:21).
Pray for those with whom you have broken fellowship and ask the Father how you may honor them.
