100-Day Identity Makeover: Day 25
You Are Led by the Spirit of God (Romans 8:14)
Each Identity Makeover post includes a statement clarifying your ownership of the identity trait based on your relationship to God as His child. Day 25, however, switches it up and states that this identity trait- led by the Spirit of God- qualifies you as a child of God.
Chapter 8 of the book of Romans clarifies a Spirit-led life:
“Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace” (Romans 8:5-6).
Did you see how many times the word mind appears in the two verses above? Four times! (Repetition in the Bible is an indicator to take notice!) The life you live, if it is sourced in the Spirit and agreed upon with your mind, will produce life and peace!
Sourced in the Spirit
An easy litmus test for being led by the Spirit of God is to consistently evaluate your thoughts, motives, attitudes, words and actions by asking, “Is this pleasing to God?” It is a self-check with the help of God’s Word and the Holy Spirit bringing a timely reminder of His eternal truth. Paul repeatedly said, “Judge for yourselves…” and it’s true. The Holy Spirit, who is called the Counselor (See John 16) will give you full understanding of what is hidden away in your heart so that you may bring it to God’s light and receive commendation for that which is pure and correction for that which is not sourced in Him. Don’t fear God’s correction. He never demoralizes you, because He is perfectly patient with you. “God’s kindness leads you toward repentance” (Romans 2:4).
Agreed Upon With Your Mind
The Spirit of God moving you in His righteousness affords you abundant life unless you refuse to agree in your mind with what He speaks to you. For instance, these 100 identity traits can remain on the pages without any effect if you choose to believe that they are for someone else and not you. You can overlook them and go on to lead a life defined by your circumstances and culture. But that’s not your story! You, Child of God, discover your identity in Christ and make agreements in your mind with the truth.
Do you see how important it is to make a mental agreement with truth? To do so, you must expose yourself to truth. The Holy Spirit is also defined as the Spirit of Truth. He only speaks what God has spoken. His voice never contradicts the Word of God (See John 16:13). So, if you hear thoughts of condemnation, know that those things are coming from a different source- the accuser of the brethren. His words are destructive, depressing and divisive. Make no agreements with them!
One more insight on mental agreements: God lovingly exposes hidden things so that they can be appropriately dealt with and your conscience can be cleansed. Only the Holy Spirit can draw these things to the surface, and when He does, you need to be honest with yourself and with the Father in heaven. DO NOT try to excuse away that thing to which He is asking you to own up. Call it what it is: jealously, hatred, betrayal, rebellion, unbelief, idolatry… Make an agreement with what God has already spoken about sin: For every instance in which we do not love Him above everything else and we do not love others as ourselves, we are operating in sin. So, when the Lord exposes that within you, the only mental agreement to make is, “Yes, Lord. I have sinned, but I thank You for making me blameless by cleansing my sin with the blood of Jesus.” That is a mental agreement with grace!
Life and Peace
Child of God, you are led by the Spirit, and out of that never-ending flow of grace comes life and peace! Your life is not lived unto yourself when you are led by the Spirit. Only the mind that agrees with the selfish nature produces fruit of hostility and division. You, however, are a conduit of the life-giving grace of God. The soul-thirsty world comes to you because you are a well-watered garden. The Spirit-led life creates. It inspires the wonder of God. It displaces unrest and invites peace to reign.
Walk It Out Hear God’s Word and put it into practice (Luke 8:21).
Draw truth from Scripture each day and inspect your heart to see if it aligns with the truth. Make mental agreements with God’s Word daily.
