Really? You’re Going to Use a Bandaid?

“Saul’s attendants said to him, ‘See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the harp. He will play when the evil spirit from God comes upon you, and you will feel better'” (1 Samuel 16:15-16).

Oh, my goodness! How often do the children of God respond to needs in the same way that Israel’s King Saul and his servants responded? It’s a spiritual problem, but we seek a material answer. Sure, the anointed music of young David ministered a measure of peace to the king as he played for him, but it did not drive out the darkness eating away at Saul’s soul. A spiritual issue requires a spiritual work of deliverance!

{Little back story: Saul was insecure as a man, so when he was entrusted with the leadership of the nation, he wasn’t cured; his insecurity led him to a maddening jealously. God removed his anointing from Saul’s kingship due to a reoccurrence of blatant rebellion, and that left him wide open for the jealous spirit to have its way in him. He became murderous like so many other insecure leaders before him and after him have done.}

Band-Aid

Really? We think applying a bandaid will heal a spiritual cancer? How often do I hear the Lord say, “Get engaged on the level demanded of you. It’s greater than you realize.”

Do you recall the encounter Jesus had with the invalid in Jerusalem? The Lord asked him if he wanted to get well. And just like us, the man looks into the face of the Living Word of God and replies that a material source offers him some hope of healing.

Jesus did not allow the poor man to remain in a state of trickle grace expectations. He revealed the Father’s overflowing grace and said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk. At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked” (John 5:8).

How about the battle at hand- what are you facing? Upon what do you place all of your expectations? Are you looking to a material source to bring solution? Do you identify with the men above who say, “Unless I put my hands to an object of hope, I have no confidence of this circumstance turning in my favor?”

Try this: lift your empty hands high above your head and tell the Father that you surrender. Tell Him you surrender the need to figure it all out and make it all happen. Make a confession of trusting Him, because you know that the supernatural solution is only within His resources, and you’re trusting Him to divinely orchestrate it to come to pass.
